Hey there, pet lovers! Dr. Matt Young here from Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital in Dapto. Today, I want to chat about something super important for our furry family members – preventing ticks!
Why Worry About Ticks?
Ticks are nasty little critters that can cause serious health issues in pets, including tick paralysis. It's a scary thought, but don't worry – I've got your back with some top tips to keep your pets safe and sound.
Spotting the Signs
First things first, knowing the signs of tick paralysis can be a lifesaver. Look out for symptoms like:
- Weakness
- A wobbly gait
- Coughing
- Gagging
- Vomiting
- Difficulty breathing
- Collapse
- Choking
If your pet seems unusually fatigued or you notice any of these signs, it's time to act fast.
Prevention is Key
For our canine companions, I recommend products like Bravecto, a chewable that's given every three months, or Nexgard, a monthly chew. These are great for keeping those pesky ticks at bay.
Cats, on the other hand, can benefit from a fipronil spray applied every three weeks. Remember, our feline friends need protection too!
Regular Checks
Make it a habit to check your pets for ticks daily, especially if they've been out and about in areas where ticks are common. For those with longer hair, keeping their coat short can make it easier to spot any unwanted hitchhikers.
When in Doubt, Shout Out!
If you're ever unsure or worried, don't hesitate to reach out to your family vet. It's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the health of your pets.
