Hey there, fellow pet lovers! Today, I want to share some vital information about a topic that's close to our hearts but often flies under the radar: Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), also known as feline AIDS.

What is FIV?

FIV is a virus similar to the human HIV virus, but it's specific to cats. This means you don't have to worry about catching it from your feline friends. It's primarily transmitted through saliva and blood, usually during cat fights. So, if your cat is an outdoor adventurer who gets into skirmishes, they're at a higher risk.

The Spread of FIV

Our team, led by Melissa, one of our fantastic vets, recently did a deep dive into our patient records. We were surprised by the number of FIV positive cases in Dapto and surrounding areas over the past few years. You can check out the map we created on our website to see the spread in our community.

Symptoms and Progression

Cats infected with FIV don't immediately show symptoms. The virus gradually weakens their immune system, making them more susceptible to other infections and diseases. Common issues include more frequent abscesses, urinary tract infections, and severe oral infections.

Can Indoor Cats Get FIV?

A question we often get is whether indoor cats are safe from FIV. The short answer is yes, but with a caveat. If they've never been outside or in fights, their risk is significantly lower. However, if you've adopted a cat and aren't sure about their past, it's wise to get them tested.

Vaccination and Prevention

We strongly advocate for vaccinating cats against FIV, especially if they venture outdoors. The vaccine involves a series of three injections, two weeks apart. For kittens, this can be done alongside their regular vaccinations. Adult cats with unknown histories or outdoor exposure should be tested before vaccination.

Living with FIV

If you have a cat that tests positive for FIV, it's not the end of the world. With proper care, they can still lead a fulfilling life. It's crucial to keep them indoors to prevent spreading the virus and to protect them from infections. Regular check-ups and a healthy environment can help manage the condition.

Our Commitment

At Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital, we're dedicated to providing the best care for your furry family members. If you have any concerns about FIV or want to know more about our vaccination packages, don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to help keep your pets healthy and happy!
