Calicivirus occurs in the Wollongong area from time to time. There are often controlled releases done to control the wild rabbit population.
Calicicirus is a viral disease of rabbits that causes them to die very quickly. It's spread by direct contact or mosquitoes so:
- Don't let your rabbit contact wild rabbits
- keep your rabbit indoors when mosquitoes are active
- use a mosquito-proof enclosure
- vaccinate your rabbit
There have been some reports of rabbits being infected with a possible strain of the virus which isn't covered by the vaccine. So it's important you use the other measures mentioned here as well as vaccination.
Vaccination should be done at 6 weeks (during an outbreak) and 12 weeks and then they should receive a yearly booster.
