Hi everyone, Matt here from Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital. Today, I'm excited to share some insights from a recent discussion led by our nurse, Lauren, about the 'Fear Free' initiative we're implementing at our clinic. This approach is all about making visits to the vet stress-free and positive for both you and your furry family members.
Introducing 'Fear Free' Practices
'Fear Free' is an online certification course that our entire team at the clinic is undertaking or has completed. The goal? To equip us with the skills and knowledge necessary to ensure your pets have a comfortable and anxiety-free experience at our hospital. And it's not just about the pets; we want you, the pet parents, to feel relaxed and reassured too.
Changes You Might Notice
Our team, including Lauren, is implementing several new practices to enhance the vet visit experience. You might notice us:
- Going Slower: We're taking our time to allow your pets to get comfortable in the consultation room.
- Using Treats: Expect lots of treats! We've set up a 'treat station' at the scales – the first stop for pets. This includes a variety of flavours to cater to all tastes and dietary needs.
- Adapting Examination Techniques: We might conduct exams on your lap, on the ground, or wherever your pet feels most comfortable.
- Asking Behavioural Questions: Understanding your pet's behaviour helps us address any stress or anxiety they might be experiencing.
Creating a Calm Environment
We're also using pheromone sprays like Feliway and Adaptil throughout the hospital. These mimic the natural pheromones that make pets feel calm and relaxed. They come in various forms – diffusers, sprays, and collars – and are an excellent tool for creating a soothing environment.
Music for Pets
Believe it or not, music isn't just for humans. We're playing calming, spa-like music specifically designed for pets in our hospital. This helps create a tranquil atmosphere for both dogs and cats.
Tips for Pet Parents
You can also implement 'Fear Free' practices at home. Using pheromone diffusers and playing calming music can make a big difference. And remember, regular, non-medical visits to the vet for treats and cuddles can help your pet associate the vet with positive experiences.
