Mel testing a urine sample in the lab

Hey everyone, Mel here from Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital in Dapto. Today, I'm excited to share some insights into a crucial aspect of pet healthcare – urinalysis. This simple test can tell us a lot about your pet's health, especially for our furry friends who can't tell us what's wrong.

The Importance of Urinalysis

Urinalysis is an essential diagnostic tool that helps us assess the overall health of your pet. It's particularly useful for detecting conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, and urinary tract infections. The process is straightforward but provides a wealth of information about your pet's internal health.

Collecting Urine Samples

For cats, we often send home special beads that help collect urine samples easily. Matt has put together a great video on our Facebook page and website about how to collect these samples. For dogs, we recommend using a clean saucer or container to catch the urine, which can then be transferred to an airtight plastic container – like a clean takeaway box.

Freshness Matters

We always prefer to analyze the freshest sample possible. If you can't bring it in right away, storing it in the fridge in an airtight container for a few hours is okay. However, try to get it to us within 24 hours to ensure the most accurate results.

What We Look For

When we receive a urine sample, we first measure its specific gravity using a refractometer. This tells us how well the kidneys concentrate urine. We also use dipsticks to test for various substances like glucose, ketones, and blood. These tests help us diagnose and manage conditions like diabetes and urinary tract infections.

Advanced Testing

In some cases, we might need to perform a more detailed analysis. This involves using a centrifuge to separate the urine sediment. We then examine this under a microscope to look for bacteria, crystals, or signs of kidney disease.

Why It's Important

Changes in urination habits, like increased frequency or accidents in the house, can be signs of health issues. By analyzing a urine sample, we can catch these problems early and start treatment sooner.

Bringing in a Sample

If you're visiting us for a health concern, bringing a urine sample can be incredibly helpful. It saves time and allows us to start diagnosing right away. If you need help collecting a sample, just let us know – we're here to help.

Urinalysis is a simple yet powerful tool in veterinary medicine. It gives us vital information that helps keep your pets healthy and happy. If you have any questions about urinalysis or need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out.

Stay informed and take care of your furry family members!

Cheers, Mel ?
