Frequently Asked Questions
Got Questions?
We Have Answers.
Our FAQs cover some of the most common queries we receive from pet owners, so you can feel informed and confident before your visit. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just give us a call, we’re always happy to chat.
What dog care services are available at your Dapto veterinary hospital?
At Companion Animal Vet in Dapto, we offer a full range of canine care — from routine health checks, vaccinations and parasite prevention to dentistry, desexing and advanced surgery. We also run our popular Puppy Pre-School for new pups and our Companion Pups program for adolescent dogs. Whether your dog is 8 weeks or 15 years old, our Dapto vet team is equipped to support them at every life stage.
How often should my dog visit the vet in Dapto?
We recommend an annual wellness check for healthy adult dogs, and twice-yearly visits for senior dogs (generally 7 years and older depending on breed). Regular check-ups allow us to detect early signs of disease, keep vaccinations current, and update your dog’s parasite prevention — all of which are especially important in the Illawarra’s warm, humid climate that favours ticks and fleas year-round.
Do you treat all dog breeds, including large and giant breeds?
Yes, absolutely. Our Dapto clinic treats dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages. We tailor our approach to your dog’s individual needs — for example, large breeds have different joint health concerns and anaesthetic considerations than smaller dogs, and we factor that into every consult and surgical plan.
What vaccinations does my dog need in NSW?
In NSW we recommend the core C3 vaccine (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus) for all dogs, with optional kennel cough (Bordetella/parainfluenza) vaccination strongly advised if your dog socialises with other dogs, visits boarding facilities, or attends dog parks around Wollongong and the Illawarra. We’ll build a vaccination schedule suited to your dog’s lifestyle during their annual health check.
Is your Dapto dog clinic fear-free?
Yes — fear-free care is central to how we practise at Companion Animal Vet. We use gentle handling, pheromone diffusers, and a calm clinic environment to reduce stress for dogs during their visit. A relaxed dog is safer and easier to examine, which means more accurate results and better care outcomes for your pet.
How do I book a dog health appointment at your Dapto vet clinic?
You can book online via our website at companionanimalvet.com.au/book, or call us directly on (02) 4261 9838. We’re conveniently located at 38 Baan Baan St, Dapto, and serve dog owners across Wollongong, Albion Park, Shellharbour, Fairy Meadow and the wider Illawarra region.
