Our FAQs cover some of the most common queries we receive from pet owners, so you can feel informed and confident before your visit. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just give us a call, we’re always happy to chat.
What surgical procedures does your Dapto vet clinic perform?
Our surgical team at Companion Animal Vet in Dapto performs a wide range of procedures including routine desexing (spey and castration for dogs, cats and rabbits), lump and mass removals, soft tissue surgery, orthopaedic procedures, emergency abdominal surgery, and veterinary dental procedures including extractions. Each surgery is tailored to your pet’s individual needs and health status.
How do you ensure my pet's safety during surgery in Dapto?
Pet safety is our absolute priority. Every surgical patient receives a pre-operative health assessment, and anaesthesia is tailored to the individual patient’s age, weight, breed and health status. During surgery, your pet is monitored with advanced equipment tracking heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, body temperature and carbon dioxide. A dedicated nurse monitors your pet throughout and during recovery, and we provide clear post-operative care instructions before your pet goes home.
Do you require pre-surgical blood tests before anaesthesia?
We recommend pre-anaesthetic blood testing for all patients, and it is essential for older pets, those with known health conditions, or patients undergoing longer procedures. Blood tests allow us to assess organ function, check for anaemia and detect hidden conditions that could affect anaesthetic choice and dosing. We’ll discuss what testing is appropriate for your pet at their pre-surgical consultation.
How long will my pet need to stay after surgery at your Dapto clinic?
Most routine day procedures — such as desexing and small lump removals — allow your pet to go home the same day once they have fully recovered from anaesthesia. More complex procedures may require an overnight stay for monitoring. We’ll give you a clear recovery plan, including activity restrictions, wound care instructions, and information on medications and follow-up appointments.
What is the recovery time after pet surgery?
Recovery time varies considerably depending on the procedure. Routine desexing in a young, healthy dog or cat typically involves 10–14 days of restricted activity. Orthopaedic or more complex soft tissue surgeries may require longer rest periods of 6–12 weeks with staged return to exercise. We provide detailed written instructions and are always available to answer post-operative questions — call us on (02) 4261 9838.
