Hey everyone, Mel here from Companion Animal Vets in Dapto. Today, I want to share with you something we're incredibly passionate about – creating a fear-free environment for our furry patients. It's not just about making our workplace better; it's about ensuring that your pets experience the least amount of stress and anxiety when they visit us.
Why a Fear-Free Environment Matters
Many dogs and cats experience anxiety when visiting the vet. This can be due to various reasons, such as unfamiliar surroundings, the presence of other animals, or past experiences. Our goal is to minimize this stress, making vet visits a more positive experience for both you and your pet.
Our Fear-Free Approach
-
Staff Training: Nearly all our staff are either certified or in the process of obtaining their Fear Free accreditation. This program trains us to handle animals in a way that reduces anxiety and stress.
-
Separate Waiting Areas: We're currently reorganizing our clinic to separate dogs and cats completely. Cats will have their own area upstairs, away from the hustle and bustle, reducing their stress significantly.
-
Recognizing Stress Signals: Our team is trained to recognize signs of stress in pets, such as panting, lip licking, and yawning in dogs. If we notice your pet is stressed, we may suggest waiting in a consult room or a quieter area.
-
Treats and Comfort Measures: We have treats and pheromone sprays (like Adaptil) readily available to help calm pets. We encourage positive associations with vet visits, like getting weighed while enjoying a treat.
-
Gentle Handling: In our treatment and recovery areas, we handle animals gently. We avoid using muzzles as much as possible and prefer to wrap cats in blankets rather than scruffing them.
Our Commitment to You and Your Pets
Our commitment to a fear-free environment extends beyond what you see during your visit. It's ingrained in every aspect of our care, from the moment your pet enters our clinic to the time they leave. We believe that by reducing stress and anxiety, we can help your pets recover faster and stay healthier.
