Meet Dr Matt Young: Your Local Dapto Vet & Friend

When you walk through the doors of Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital, you aren’t just entering a medical facility; you’re entering a practice built on a decade and a half of local history.

In a world where many veterinary clinics are becoming part of large, faceless corporations, we remain proudly independent and locally owned. At the heart of that independence is our founder, Dr Matt Young.

From Local Resident to Local Vet

Dr Matt isn’t just a veterinary surgeon in the Illawarra; he’s a Dapto local. Having established the clinic in October 2009, Matt’s vision was simple: to create a place where the community could find high-level medical expertise delivered with the warmth of a small-town practice.

“The best part of being a vet in Dapto is the relationships,” says Matt. “I’ve seen puppies grow into seniors, and I’ve supported families through every stage in between. You don’t get that same connection when you’re just a number in a corporate database.”

A Day in the Life: Beyond the Stethoscope

What does a typical day look like for Matt? It’s a balancing act of complex surgery, diagnostic puzzles, and most importantly listening to pet owners.

  • 7:30 AM: Arriving at the Baan Baan St clinic to check on overnight patients.
  • 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Surgical time. Whether it’s a routine desexing or a complex soft-tissue procedure, Matt’s focus is on anaesthesia safety and precision.
  • 2:00 PM: Consultations. This is where the “detective work” happens identifying why a dog is limping or why a cat’s behaviour has shifted.
  • Late Afternoon: Community engagement. You’ll often find Matt chatting with neighbours or checking in on local animal welfare initiatives.

Why "Independent" Matters for Your Pet

You might wonder why we make a point of being an independent vet near me. For our clients, it means three things:

  1. Continuity of Care: You’ll see the same familiar faces. Dr Matt, Kate, Kirstin, and Lara work as a cohesive team who know your pet’s history by heart.
  2. Tailored Treatment: We aren’t restricted by corporate “quotas” or preferred brands. We recommend what is truly best for your specific pet.
  3. Local Reinvestment: When you support us, you’re supporting a business that lives, shops, and breathes in the Illawarra.

Part of the Dapto Fabric

We are proud members of the Dapto Community Group and other local initiatives. For Dr Matt and the entire team, being a Dapto vet is about more than just medicine; it’s about being a trusted neighbour you can rely on when things get tough.
