Hello, I'm Matt from Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital. Bringing a new kitten into your home is an exciting time, and it's important to start their health care right. In this post, we'll cover the essentials of vaccinations, worming, and flea control for your new furry friend.

Vaccinations for Kittens

Vaccinations are crucial for protecting your kitten against feline parvovirus and cat flu. Kittens receive some immunity from their mother, but this wears off over time. To ensure they are protected, we recommend monthly vaccinations until they are 16 weeks old. A first annual vaccination at 6 months is also important to cover any kittens that didn't respond to the earlier vaccines.

  • F3 Vaccination: Covers feline parvovirus, feline herpes virus, and feline calicivirus.
  • FIV Vaccination: Recommended if your kitten will go outside. This series of three vaccinations protects against feline AIDS caused by cat bites.

Worming Your Kitten

For easy and effective worming, we suggest using Revolution monthly. This treatment is applied to the skin and covers both worms and fleas. However, it doesn't cover tapeworm, which can be treated separately if needed.

Flea Control

Revolution also acts as a flea treatment. Keeping fleas under control is essential, as fleas are often linked with tapeworm infections.

Conclusion

To keep your kitten healthy and happy, a regular schedule of vaccinations, worming, and flea control is key.
