Hello, everyone! Mel here from Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital in Dapto. I'm super excited to share with you all the fun and learning from our latest Facebook Live session. This time, we tackled a topic that's super important for all you dog parents out there – understanding your dog's body condition. Trust me, it's not just about how cuddly they are!
What's the Ideal Look for Your Pooch?
We've all been there – wondering if our furry friend is too skinny or maybe indulging a bit too much. And it doesn't help when everyone has an opinion about it! So, let's break down what a healthy doggo should look like.
Key Checks for a Healthy Pup
-
That Waistline, Though: A healthy dog should sport a nice waist when you look from above. It's like their version of a beach bod. Especially easy to spot in short-haired breeds.
-
Ribs – Feel, Don't See: You should be able to feel your dog's ribs without a thick layer of fat, but they shouldn't be on display for the world to see.
-
Belly Tuck: From the side, your dog should have a neat upward tuck in the belly area. It's all about that sleek profile.
-
Muscles for Days: A fit dog will show off some nice muscle mass and tone, particularly around the back and hindquarters.
-
Tail Base Chic: Around the tail base, we don't want to see a square or overly rounded shape. A gentle inward curve is the goal.
Real Doggos, Real Examples
In our live session, we had some fabulous models, including a Kelpie and a puppy. The Kelpie was a star, showing off a perfect waistline, a great underbelly tuck, and just the right amount of rib coverage.
