Deciding when and where to desex your pet is one of the most important healthcare decisions you’ll make as a pet owner. At Companion Animal Veterinary Hospital, we understand that sending your furry family member in for surgery can be nerve-wracking.
As a leading pet desexing clinic in Dapto, our goal is to provide a safe, “fear-free” experience for your pet while giving you all the facts you need to feel confident.
Common Desexing Myths vs. The Facts
There is a lot of misinformation online regarding desexing. Let’s clear up the most common ones we hear in the clinic:
- Myth: “My pet’s personality will change.”
- Fact: Desexing doesn’t change your pet’s core personality. It can, however, reduce undesirable hormone-driven behaviours like roaming, aggression, or “marking” territory.
- Myth: “Desexing makes pets overweight.”
- Fact: While desexing can slightly lower a pet’s metabolic rate, weight gain is easily managed with appropriate diet and exercise. We provide tailored nutrition advice during your Puppy Preschool or kitten checks to prevent this.
- Myth: “It’s better to let a female have one litter first.”
- Fact: There is no medical evidence to support this. In fact, desexing before the first heat cycle significantly reduces the risk of mammary tumours and eliminates the risk of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra).
When is the Best Age to Desex?
The “perfect” time for desexing is no longer a one-size-fits-all answer. While 6 months used to be the standard, modern veterinary surgery in the Illawarra now looks at the individual:
- Cats: Generally around 4-6 months to prevent unplanned litters.
- Small Breed Dogs: Usually 6 months.
- Large Breed Dogs: We may recommend waiting until 9–12 months to allow for proper bone and joint development.
- Rabbits: Usually between 4-6 months to prevent reproductive cancers and territorial aggression.
The Recovery Process: 5 Tips for a Smooth Week
Most pets bounce back very quickly, but the first 7–10 days are crucial for healing.
- Strict Rest: No running, jumping, or rough play. This prevents the internal stitches from stretching or tearing.
- The “Cone of Shame”: Whether it’s an Elizabethan collar or a medical onesie, your pet must be prevented from licking the incision site.
- Monitor the Incision: Check the site twice daily for redness, swelling, or discharge.
- Pain Management: We provide multi-modal pain relief for all our soft tissue surgeries. Ensure you follow the medication schedule even if your pet “seems fine.”
- Quiet Environment: Give them a warm, indoor space away from other pets or loud children for the first 48 hours.
Why Choose Our Dapto Clinic?
We don’t cut corners on safety. Every desexing procedure at our hospital includes:
- Pre-Anaesthetic Blood Testing: To ensure your pet’s internal organs can safely process the anaesthesia.
- Dedicated Nurse Monitoring: A qualified vet nurse stays with your pet from the moment they go under until they are fully awake.
- Advanced Surgical Suite: We use the same sterile standards and monitoring equipment you’d find in a human hospital.
