Imminently there will be a release of RHVD virus in the Wollongong area.
Both RHVD and myxomatosis are fatal diseases of rabbits that are used to control wild populations of rabbits. After the wet year we've had the rabbit population has exploded and council is working with the department of primary industries to control these populations by releasing RHVD virus.
To protect your rabbit against RHDV you need to have your rabbit's vaccination current.
Vaccination is the best protection
The recommended protocol for RHDV in rabbits is a vaccination with cylap RCD vaccination. Due to new variants the protocol for vaccination that is recommended has changed:- For kittens vaccinate at 4, 8 and 12 weeks, then every 6 months.
- For rabbits over 12 weeks they need 2 shots 1 month apart.
- All rabbits should have a 6 monthly booster for life
You need to protect against Myxomatosis as well
To protect against myxomatosis there is no vaccination available in Australia. You should:- Keep your rabbit indoors if possible
- Cover their enclosure in mosquito-proof netting
- Not allow interaction with wild rabbits
